U18 Kings split with Shattuck-St. Mary’s

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay under-18 Kings split a two-game set versus the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres prep side, over the weekend at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Seeing their first home ice action of the season, Thunder Bay skated away with a 6-5 triumph Saturday before Shattuck rebounded for a 7-3 decision Sunday.

In the opener, the Kings tallied twice in each period to collect the victory.

Lucas Bertolin chipped in offensively, with a pair of tallies, including notching the game-winner with 3:57 remaining in regulation.

They also saw Ben Exell score twice while Kaden Goodwin and Jarod Lemieux also found the back of the net.

Sam Keene was busy between the pipes for the hosts, seeing 47 shots against fired his way in earning the win.

The Sabres countered in the finale however to salvage a split.

Mitch Vanderwey scored twice for the Kings in the setback, Morgan Henderson adding the other.

Goaltender Travis Smith played the first two sessions in net, in defeat, while facing 19 attempts on target while Keene provided 20 minutes of relief and had eight stops.

The two teams will meet again, October 29-30, with a trio of match-ups at the SSM Ice Arena, in Faribault, Minn.
