Minor midget Kings start strong in NAPHL play

BLAINE, Minn. – Christian Veneruzzo tallied twice to help lift the Thunder Bay minor midget Kings to a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Tigers Thursday morning in their North American Prospects Hockey League opener in Blaine, Minn.

Veneruzzo began the scoring with the lone goal in the first period as he connected just 77 seconds into the contest.

Special teams allowed Thunder Bay to go in front early in the middle stanza thank to an Ethan Carlson-Jourdain man advantage effort at 2:15.

Thunder Bay came right back and added another on the next shift on Veneruzzo’s second of the day.

The Kings kept coming as Keighan Gerrie then made it 4-0 at 7:45 of the second.

Colorado Springs picked up their lone goal of the game with under three minutes to go in the session.

Thunder Bay however capped off the win with an empty netter courtesy of Anthony Biniaris late in the third to round out the scoring.

Christian Cicigoi made 16 saves to pick up the win for his side, who outshot the Tigers 34-17 overall.

The minor midgets return to the ice later today as they take on Meier AAA of Western Michigan at 4:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, NAPHL game action for the major midget Kings also starts Thursday when they face-off with HC Dallas at 2 p.m. back in Blaine.
