Tough day for Kings in NAPHL play Saturday
BLAINE, Minn. – It was a tough day on the ice Saturday for the Thunder Bay Kings in North American Prospects Hockey League action with the minor midgets dropping a pair of contests while the majors fell in their lone match-up.
The minors were edged 2-1 by the Shattuck-St. Mary’s before dropping a 4-2 decision to the New Jersey Titans.
Meanwhile the major midget under-18 side was bounced 8-1 by the Valley Forge Minutemen from Pennsylvania.
Against Shattuck, the under-16 minor midgets saw the Sabres score once in the first and second stanzas before Dylan Bertrand got one for the Kings with three and a half minutes remaining in regulation.
However, they could not net the equalizer as SSM held on for the victory.
Shots on goal in the contest were 28 apiece with Eric Vanska suffering the setback in goal.
As for the meeting vs. the Titans, Travis Henrud tallied twice to help give the Kings a 2-1 lead heading into the third, but New Jersey notched three unanswered markers there to pull out the win.
Stephan Bourgeois faced 25 shots between the pipes for Thunder Bay.
The U-16 Kings are back it Sunday at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Valley Forge.
In the Minutemen’s U-18 romp over the major midgets, they were up 4-0 before Kyle Swerhun scored for Thunder Bay midway through the middle frame, but Valley Forge tacked on four more after that to win going away.
Jordan Smith saw 32 shots in the loss in goal for the Kings.
The majors have two tilts on the slate Sunday as they take on a pair of Washington State sides.
They meet the Wenatchee Wild at 11:30 a.m. before wrapping up the day at 9 p.m. vs. the Everett Silvertips.
