Kings earn 2nd point at peewee provincials

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Kings got a 31-save performance from goaltender Gage Stewart to help his side earn a 2-2 tie vs. the Nickel City Sons Thursday morning in Day 4 play at the 2016 all-Ontario peewee championship in Sudbury.

Thunder Bay got on the board first in this one with Tyler Lewis notching an unassisted marker at 5:50 of the opening period.

Nickel City drew level early in the middle session as Bradley Brunet knocked in a rebound following a save by Kings’ starter Stewart.

Brunet came right back and added another as his attempt from in close just trickled across the goal line to make it 2-1 Nickel City at 2:43.

Thunder Bay would tie it with 4:19 to go in the middle session as Alex Atwill lifted a backhand over a sprawled Sons netminder Patrick Boivin.

Neither side would notch any more markers the rest of the way as the two netminders kept opposing shooters at bay the rest of the way, including a splendid glove save by Stewart on a Nickel City breakaway with two minutes to play.

Final shots on goal in the contest favoured the Sudbury-area side by a 33-21 margin.

With the result the Kings record at the provincials moves to 0-3-2.

They will conclude their season Thursday afternoon against the unbeaten Don Mills Flyers of Toronto (5-0) at 2:15 p.m.
