PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Competing in their first tournament of the season, the Thunder Bay under-15 Kings claimed the consolation final title Sunday Boston Pizza Icefest in Peterborough.
They opened play Thursday with a 6-2 victory over the Clarington Toros.
Friday’s slate saw them drop a 3-0 result to the eventual tournament champion Peterborough Petes.
Next came a 3-1 setback, with an empty netter deciding things vs. the Ontario Hockey Academy Mavericks out of Cornwall.
The Kings then went on a roll from there, racking up four straight triumphs to take the consolation crown.
First came victories over the Oakville Rangers (4-2) and the CIH Academy Voyageurs (3-1) on Saturday.
Moving to the semifinals Sunday, Thunder Bay went on to edge the North Bay Trappers 4-3.
Taking on the Soo Jr. Greyhounds in the finale, the Kings sMARLed back from a one-goal deficit in the third period to pull out a 3-2 win.
Thunder Bay netminders Chase Furlong & Travis VanderZwaag were solid throughout the weekend posting a combined 2.29 goals-against average, picking up five triumphs in total.
Forward Carter Poddubny led the Kings offensively and was among the leading point-getters in the 16-team U-15 Division with six goals and three assists.
Also, competing in Peterborough was Thunder Bay’s U-13 team.
They went 2-3 in the U-13 Division of the event.
The Kings were blanked 6-0 by the Toronto Titans, who went on to take the U-13 crown.
Next up saw the Lakehead contingent skate to a 5-3 win over the Ajax-Pickering Raiders before falling 6-3 to the Upper Canada Cyclones.
Finishing up the Kings topped the host Peterborough Petes 5-2 before concluding with a 5-2 defeat against the Ottawa Valley Titans.
