Bantam Kings win HNO District title

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay bantam Kings got a pair of goals and an assist from Christian Veneruzzo to help lead them to a 5-1 victory over the NWO North Stars from the Western Zone in Game 2 of the Hockey Northwestern Ontario AAA district championship Saturday at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Combined with a 3-2 triumph over the North Stars Friday, the Kings win the best-of-three series 2-0 and will now move on to represent HNO at the all-Ontario bantam championship March 28 through April 2 in Rockland, Ont.

Thunder Bay opened the scoring near the seven-minute mark of the opening frame on a Dawson Kaemingh effort.

Michael Stubbs then put the club up 2-0 later in the frame before the Western Zone reps picked up their lone tally 40 seconds later from Jacob Frankcom.

The Kings opened up their lead by striking twice in the middle session as Veneruzzo scored shorthanded at 4:49 while Owen Perala added an even strength effort a minute and a half later.

Veneruzzo capped off the scoring in the latter stages of the contest with an insurance marker.

Keighan Kerrie dished out a pair of assists for Thunder Bay in the win.

The Kings held a wide edge in shots on goal firing 45 pucks on North Stars netminder Cooper Hatfield.

Jordan Smith faced 11 attempts in a winning cause for Thunder Bay.
