Kings let lead slip away in loss vs. host Sudbury at provincials
SUDBURY, Ont. – For a third straight game the Thunder Bay Kings let a lead slip away this time seeing the host Sudbury Wolves sMARL back from the two-goal third period deficit to win 6-4 Tuesday evening in Day 2 play at the 2016 all-Ontario peewee championship.
The hosts from Sudbury were quick to get on the board as Ethan Marois began the scoring 50 seconds after the opening face-off.
Thunder Bay came right back however on the next shift and notched the equalizer at 1:52 courtesy of Nolan Desjardins.
It was more Kings a mere 42 seconds later as Alex Atwill scored from Jett Mintenko and Alex Pineau.
The goals kept coming as the Wolves drew level at 6:50 on a Christopher Innes effort.
The offensive outburst continued with Thunder Bay regaining the lead once again with five minutes left in the session on Hunter Matyasovszky first of the provincials.
Atwill was at it again in the middle session as he notched his second of the night during a Kings power play at 9:51 to put his side up a pair entering the third.
In the final stanza it was all Sudbury however as they notched the four unanswered goals to complete the comeback win.
After Max McCure made it 3-2 early, the Wolves Carter Benson struck shorthanded at 4:39 to level the proceedings.
Sudbury then got the eventual game-winner midway through the period on Innes’ second of the night.
The home side then capped off the rally with a late empty netter from Cameron Walker to secure the decision.
Thunder Bay outshot the Wolves 24-20 on the night with Jake Marois recording the victory while Brayden McKever suffered the setback.
Next up for the 0-2-1 Kings will be a 2:15 p.m. contest Wednesday vs. the 1-2-0 Whitby Wildcats.
