Markham improves to 4-0 at U13 provincials with win over Sun County

THUNDER BAY – The front-running Markham Majors registered their fourth straight victory at the All-Ontario under-13 AAA championship, presented by BioSteel, Friday by defeating the Sun County Panthers 4-1.

A fast-paced, evenly played, first period saw it go scoreless, much in part due to the efforts of goaltenders Noah Spiteri of the Panthers and the Majors Massimo Tomassi.

Trading tallies a minute apart in the second stanza, Joseph Fenwick buried one from the left side for Markham, only to see Gianluca McClure finish off a nice crisp three-way passing play with teammates Carter Trudell and Matthew Taylor.

The Majors regained the lead midway through the match-up when Carter Cross broke up and play in the neutral zone, which allowed Jack Samek to wheel into the Panthers zone and rifle one top shelf from the high slot.

Adding an impressive marker late in the period, Justin Boudreau put Markham up by a pair.

Boudreau then tacked on another in the third as he deflected a Cross wrister from the right point with 6:32 to play to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal ended up 34-22 in favour of the winning side.

Collecting player of the game laurels were Cross and Sun County’s Taylor.
