TELUS Cup West Regional awaits U18 Kings

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay under-18 Kings head to Kenora later in the week to compete in the TELUS Cup West Regional Championship at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre.

Action for the Kings in the four-team event begins Thursday at 9 p.m. ET as they take on the host Kenora Thistles.

Up next will be a 5:30 p.m. ET match-up Friday against the Winnipeg Wild, the U18 AAA title holders out of Manitoba.

Then comes another stern test Saturday as Thunder Bay meets the Regina Pat Canadians, out of Saskatchewan, at 12:30 p.m. ET.

The top two teams following round robin play meet Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to see who will move on to compete in the TELUS Cup national U18 championship, that goes April 21-27 in Chilliwack, B.C.

First played for back in 1984, among the current competing clubs, the Kings have four West Regional crowns to their credit in that span (1992; 1995; 1996; 1997); the Pat Canadians six (1988; 1989; 1994; 1999; 2015; 2017) while the Thistles and Wild will be in search of their first.

Regina has also won four national U18 championships over the years, including back in 1988 at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay. They were victorious as well in 1983; ’94 & ’99.

The Kings meanwhile are two-time winners, mining gold in 1995 & ’97 in Sherbrooke, Que., and New Glasgow, N.S., respectively.
