Tough day on ice for Kings Saturday

MADISON, Wis. – It was a tough day on the ice for both the Thunder Bay major and minor midget Kings Saturday with both clubs dropping a pair of games each.

The majors fell 5-0 to the Sioux Falls Stampede and 3-2 to the Madison Capitols at the Gold Medal Classic in Madison, Wis., while the minors suffered a 5-3 setback to the Peterborough Petes and a narrow 3-2 loss vs. the Markham Waxers at the Tournament of Champions event in Peterborough, Ont.

Major midget action saw Thunder Bay go down 2-0 after one period of play against Sioux Falls and see the score stay that way through the second intermission before the Stampede put the game away with a trio of tallies in the third.

Seth McKay suffered the defeat in net stopping 15 of the 20 attempts he faced.

In the match-up with Madison, Christian Veneruzzo gave the Kings the lead before Tyler Nelson scored twice and assisted on another to put the Capitols up by a pair.

Zach Fortin got one back with three and a half minutes to go, but Madison held on for the triumph.

Jordan Smith made 34 saves in goal for Thunder Bay.

The Kings conclude play Sunday at 10 a.m. as they take on Culver Academy of Indiana.

Meanwhile in Peterborough, the minor midgets were in every game, but could not find the win column as they finished the 20-team tourney with an 0-4 record.

In Saturday’s loss vs. the Petes, Michael Stubbs scored twice for Thunder Bay and MacKenzie Sedgwick supplied a single while Eric Vanska suffered the setback in net.

Wrapping up competition against Markham, the Kings rallied from the two-goal deficit in the third period on markers from Stubbs and Konner Kuuskivi only to see the Waxers pick-up the game-winner with 64 seconds remaining in regulation.

Stubbs also had an assist against Markham with Stephan Bourgeois tending goal for Thunder Bay.

Both of the Kings’ clubs will also be on the road next weekend as they travel Blaine, Minn., to conclude regular season play in the North American Prospects Hockey League.
