Kings go 1-1 Sunday in NAPHL action
TROY, Mich. – It was a split Sunday for the Thunder Bay Kings in Round 3 action in the North American Prospects Hockey League in Troy, Mich., with the minor midget side edging the Colorado Springs Tigers 3-2 while the major midgets with clipped 5-2 by the Tampa Scorpions.
Under-16 minor midget play saw Thunder Bay take a 1-0 lead after one period of play as Hayden Cattani connected nine minutes into the contest.
The Kings also picked up the lone marker of the middle stanza as well with Michael Goegan scoring at 5:57 of the frame.
In the third, Colorado Springs drew to within one at 9:11 only to see Michael Stubbs strike just 21 seconds later to restore the two-goal lead.
The Tigers did get one more later in the frame, but Stephan Bourgeois finished up with 23 saves in net to backstop Thunder Bay to the victory.
They will now finish up Round 3 of NAPHL play Monday at 7 a.m. vs. the Connecticut Elite.
Meanwhile the under-18 major midgets saw the Scorpions strike three times in the first period to take early control of the match-up.
Jonathon Kilby put the Kings on the board 14:22 into the middle session only to see Tampa get that right back on the next shift.
The two teams then traded tallies in the third to round out the scoring, including one from Thunder Bay’s Jeff Gula.
The Kings were outshot 28-22 overall with Seth McKay suffering the loss.
Monday sees the major midgets wrapping up play vs. the New Jersey Titans at 11:15 a.m.
