NAPHL play in Colorado sees Kings split Saturday
SUPERIOR, Colo. – North American Prospects Hockey League action in Superior, Colo., Saturday saw the Thunder Bay Kings split a pair of contests.
The minor midget under-16 squad sMARLed back from an early deficit and counter with four unanswered goals to defeat the Arizona Bobcats 5-2 while the major midget under-18 side dropped a 4-0 decision to the Madison Capitols.
In the U-16 contest, Jonathon Kilby set-up Christian Veneruzzo for a power play marker seven minutes in to put Thunder Bay in front only to see Bobcats strike back with two tallies to go up 2-1.
The Kings notched the lone offensive effort in the middle stanza thanks to Cooper Witherspoon with 2:39 left in the session.
It was all Thunder Bay in the third period as they struck three times to secure the victory.
It began with Zach Fortin’s game-winner 17 seconds into the frame.
They then got some insurance off the sticks Anthony Biniaris and Keighan Gerrie later on to round out the scoring.
The Kings outshot Arizona 29-26 with Jordan Smith earning the win in goal.
As for the major midgets they fell behind early and Madison never faltered in skating to the triumph.
The Capitols scored twice in the first to go up by a pair and then after a scoreless second, added another just 19 seconds into the third to extend their cushion.
Jakob Hanthorn’s third goal of the game, coming via the power play, with 8:41 remaining helped seal it for Madison.
The Caps held a big edge in shots firing 36 attempts on Kings’ starter Ryan Fanti while Bryce Hanson had to make just 10 stops to post the shutout.
The minor midgets’ final game in Colorado goes Sunday at 1:15 p.m. as they take on the Everett Jr. Silvertips from Washington State while majors go up against the Northern Cyclones of New Hampshire at 3:45 p.m.
