Kings improve to 2-0 in Sudbury

SUDBURY, Ont. – Michael Stubbs’ second goal of the game, with 13:11 remaining, proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay bantam Kings edged the Soo Thunder 5-4 Saturday in Day 2 play of the Sudbury Showcase at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

The back and for forth affair saw each side tally twice in the opening period with Nicholas DeGrazia and Owen Perala connecting for Thunder Bay in the session.

Action in the middle stanza saw Sault Ste. Marie go in front four and a half minutes into the frame only to see the Kings strike twice in a 129-second span to draw level, then go in front, with Mason Bazaluk tying things up before Stubbs levelled the proceedings.

The Thunder did knot the affair at 4-4 before the second was complete.

That set the stage for Stubbs to provide the winner with the lone marker of the third.

Bazaluk and Nikolas Campbell aided the Thunder Bay cause with two assists apiece.

Stephan Bourgeois picked up the victory in net for the Kings.

Game action for the bantams at the five-team Showcase in Greater Sudbury resumes at 6 p.m. today as they take on the host Nickel City Sons.

The Kings then conclude play Sunday with a 10 a.m. match-up against the North Bay Trappers.
