Kings weekend wrap-up

ORT HURON, Mich. – The Thunder Bay peewee and bantam Kings concluded play at the 56th annual International Silver Stick tournament over the weekend.

Thunder Bay’s AAA peewees advanced to the quarter-finals before falling while the bantams did not make it through to the playoff round.

Opening up against the Syracuse Nationals, the Kings fell 4-0 with netminder Chase Furlong making 21 saves on 24 shots while the finally tally of the contest was scored into an empty net.

Up next, the peewees went on to double up the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers 4-2 with goals from Max Leduc, Emerson DeGiacomo, Nolen Sloan and Mitchell Vanderwey.

Carter George made 16 saves in the triumph.

They then skated to a 1-1 draw with the Toronto Titans with DeGiacomo scoring for Thunder Bay while Furlong finished with 22 stops in the draw.

Wrapping up round robin play, the Kings went back to the win column as they topped Detroit Little Caesars 4-1.

Peter Forester, Lucas Bertolin, Carter Deschamps and Owen Renn were the marksmen in the victory with George finishing with 20 saves in the triumph.

With their 2-1-1 record helping send the Kings to the quarter-finals, Thunder Bay met the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs, but fell 4-1.

Matthew Lysak had the lone goal in the loss while George handled 20 of 23 in net before the Chiefs iced it with a late empty netter.

As for the bantam Kings, they had a tough time of it offensively dropping all four games they played, being blanked by the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, Detroit Honeybaked and the Ohio Blue Jackets and dropping a 3-1 score to the Toronto Nationals.

Meanwhile the Thunder Bay major midgets skated to a pair of road wins over the weekend beating the Nipigon Elks 7-3 Saturday before cruising past the Schreiber Falcons 12-0 Sunday in Lakehead Junior Hockey League play.

Trenton Morriseau and Dawson Lampi both tallied twice in the decision vs. Nipigon while Mason Bazaluk, Anthony Biniaris and Peter Hannula added singles.

Eric Vanska picked up the win in net.

In the romp over Schreiber, Jordan Barensky had a hat trick and an assist while Bazaluk scored once and set-up three others and Travis Hensrud had a two-goal, two-assist day.

Also scoring for Thunder Bay was Nikolas Campbell, Cole MacKenzie, Hannula and Morriseau.

A 15-save effort by goaltender Jordan Smith helped him post the shutout.
