Bantam Kings fall in shootout in Big Nickel quarter-finals; peewees win their finale
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay bantam Kings dropped a 2-1 decision in a shootout to the Ottawa Valley Titans Saturday in quarter-final play at 37th annual Big Nickel AAA hockey tournament in Sudbury while the peewee Kings wrapped up play in their division with a 3-2 victory over the York-Simcoe Express.
After a scoreless first period in the bantam contest, Thunder Bay got on the board midway through the second and Mason Bazaluk connected on a man advantage opportunity with Travis Hensrud and Dylan Bertrand adding assists.
The Kings carried the slim one-goal lead into the third where Ottawa Valley tied it and forced extra time with 9:50 remaining in regulation.
The five-minute overtime solved nothing so extra shots were required to determine a winner.
It was there in the shootout that the Titans prevailed, two goals to none, to pull out the victory.
Thunder Bay held the edge in shots by a 23-12 margin with Connor Lemieux suffering the setback in net for the Kings.
The peewees meanwhile skated to the win in their final contest in Sudbury thanks to a late goal by Jett Mintenko with 67 seconds left in the third period.
Connor Chislholm staked the Kings to the lead however York-Simcoe drew level 49 seconds later.
Neither side would score in the middle session, but the Express went in front with 5:18 to go.
It was then Thunder Bay’s turn to counter on the next shift as Jack Pineau finished off a Cole Morancy feed to knot the affair at 2-2.
Thunder with OT looming it was the Kings who would win it late as Mintenko scored on the power play.
Mannerplaw Winning and Josh Lehto had helpers on the deciding tally.
Oliver Tuchenhagen picked up the win in goal for the peewee Kings.
