Bantam Kings off to quarter-finals; peewees remain winless at Big Nickel tourney
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay bantam Kings are off to the quarter-finals of the 37th annual Big Nickel AAA hockey tournament in Sudbury while the peewee Kings are still in search of their first victory.
The 4-0 bantams earned their quarter-final berth vs. the Ottawa Valley Titans at 6:30 p.m. Saturday after defeating the Guelph Jr. Gryphons 2-1 earlier in the day.
As for the peewee Kings, they fell 3-0 in a hard-fought contest to the Waterloo Wolves.
In the bantam match-up with Guelph, Thunder Bay got on the board 3:52 into the contest as Michael Stubbs finished off the work of Mason Bazaluk and Cole MacKenzie.
They then made it 2-0 just 73 seconds later compliments of a Trystan Goodman marker. Owen Perala and Mackenzie Sedgwick earned assists on the tally.
The Jr. Gryphons did get one back, via the power play, in the second period, but Kings’ netminder Stephan Bourgeois shut the door the rest of the way as Thunder Bay would eventually prevail.
The morning game for the peewees with tightly contested as it remained scoreless until late in regulation when Waterloo got the eventual game-winner with 4:26 left in regulation.
The Wolves added one more a couple minutes later then iced it with an empty netter to round out the scoring.
Keenan Marks allowed just two against in defeat in the Thunder Bay net in a match-up they were outshot in by a 24-19 margin.
They will return to the ice this evening at 5 p.m. as they take on the York-Simcoe Express.
