Kings blanked by Cantonniers in season finale

HUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Kings 2018-19 campaign came to a close Friday night as they dropped a 3-0 decision at the hands of the unbeaten Magog Cantonniers in Day 5 action at the 2019 TELUS Cup Canadian National Midget Hockey Championship at the Fort William Gardens.

The Quebec side struck early as Alexandre Doucet finished off a Justin Robidas feed beating Thunder Bay starter Eric Vanska in the first period.

Magog tacked on two more off the stick of Zachary Barabe as the Cantonniers took a three-goal cushion into the back half of the final stanza.

After that, the Kings opted to put in veteran goaltender Jordan Smith to play the final minutes of the contest as he finished up his minor hockey career going spotless the rest of the way.

Final shots on the night were 38-31 in favour of Magog with Xavier Dupont posting the shutout.

The Cantonniers will now meet the Tisdale Trojans in semifinal play Saturday at 6 p.m. while the Calgary Buffaloes and Toronto Young Nationals will meet in the other semi back at the Gardens at 2 p.m.
