Kings fall 6-2 to Hamilton in peewee provincials’ opener

TORONTO, Ont. – Patrick Thomas tallied, including the game-winner, as the Hamilton Huskies struck for four third period goals to defeat the Thunder Bay Kings 6-2 Monday in Day 1 play at the all-Ontario peewee championship at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Thunder Bay did begin on a positive note, notching the opening marker of the contest five minutes in as Jett Mintenko fired a nice cross-ice pass over to Zach Biniaris in the slot, who whipped one past Hamilton netminder Riley George.

An early power play to begin the second allowed the huskies to draw level with Juston Dezoete supplying the equalizer at 2:08 as his attempt eluded Kings’ starter Oliver Tuchenhagen.

The Hockey Northwestern Ontario champions regained the lead with some nice work from the trio of Alex Arella, Manerplaw Winning and Jack Pineau with Winning knocking it in during a goal-mouth scramble at 9:33.

Hamilton tied it again with another man advantage effort 63 seconds later however as Thomas lifted a nice backhand over the shoulder of Tuchenhagen to knot the affair at 2-2 after two.

Thomas the added the eventual difference maker in the third as he made a couple of nice spin moves behind the net before darting out front and lifting another backhand attempt high into the top corner of the Thunder Bay net at 5:52.

The Huskies tacked on another four minutes later as an open Peter Kioussis snapped one in from close range.

Tyson Wassink then added some insurance for Hamilton with an empty netter before Kioussis rounded out the scoring in the final minute.

Player of the game honours went to Thomas and Thunder Bay’s Owen Loubier.

The Kings return to the ice Tuesday where they have a pair of games on the slate.

They’ll begin with an 8 a.m. encounter with the Ajax-Pickering Raiders before concluding the day against the Soo Greyhounds at 3 p.m.
