Kings fall in Winnipeg finale

WINNIPEG, Man. – The Rink Hockey Academy Nationals broke open a tie game with four unanswered third period tallies to defeat the Thunder Bay bantam Kings 7-3 Sunday in the finale of a three-game series in Winnipeg, Man.

Jacob Sargent gave Thunder Bay the lead 6:06 into the contest with assists going to Noah Broughton and Jack Michaels.

After the Nationals tied it, Alex Atwill set-up Jeremy Dunmore to put the Kings back in front after one period of play.

Rink Academy would score twice in the middle session to go up 3-2 before Atwill finished off the work of Matthew Valiquette to knot the affair after 40 minutes.

However the Nationals, who outshot Thunder Bay 53-19 in the contest, broke it open in the third to win going away.

Brayden McKever started in net for the Kings and stopped 29 of 32 in two periods of work while Gage Stewart suffered the setback in relief facing 21 shots fired his way in the final frame.

Up next for the Thunder Bay bantams will be the Hockey Northwestern Ontario District Championship, March 16-18, at Fort William First Nation Arena.

The winner of the HNO Districts will advance to the All-Ontario bantam championship, April 2-6, in Orillia.
