
THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Kings will be one of sixteen AAA teams taking part in under-14 OHL Cup in Kingston this weekend.
Action in the three-day event will feature 15 Ontario sides and one from Michigan competing.
Thunder Bay opens up play Friday at 11:30 a.m. when they meet the Ottawa Jr. 67’s.
They’ll then take on the York-Simcoe Express later in the day at 4:30 p.m.
Wrapping up round robin competition Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., they’ll go up against the Toronto Marlboros.
From there, the top two sides in each division of four will move on to the quarter-finals, which go Saturday night.
Sunday’s slate sees semifinal action going that morning while the championship game is set for 4 p.m.
U16/U18 WRAP: It was a tough go for both the U16 & U18 Kings’ squad at their respective season-ending events.
At the OHL Cup in Toronto, the U16s went 0-4 dropping decisions to the TPH Thunder (13-1); London Jr. Knights (10-1); Barrie Jr. Colts (7-0) and the Don Mills Flyers (9-1).
As for the U18s, they lost three times at the TELUS Cup West Regional in Regina, Sask.
They dropped decisions to the eventual repeat regional champion Regina Pat Canadians (13-1) as well as the Winnipeg Bruins (7-2) and Moose Jaw Warriors (7-2).
Meanwhile, U16 Kings’ defenceman Charlie Crane was named one of seven recipients of 2025-26 U16 AAA Player of the Year Awards, among the respective minor hockey branches across Ontario, that were presented during the OHL Cup.
Crane garnered the POY laurels for Hockey Northwestern Ontario.
The late 2010-born rearguard logged big minutes for the Kings all season long.
Then at the West Regional, another D-man, in Nate Girvin, received one of the Adam Herold Scholarship Awards, which were awarded to a graduating player who showed characteristics such as Compassion, Accountability, Work Ethic, Sportsmanship, & Gratitude, on and off the ice.
