Late rally falls short as Kings edged in OHL Cup finale

TORONTO – A late third period rally fell just short Friday afternoon as the Thunder Bay minor midget Kings were edged 3-2 by the Ajax-Pickering Raiders in their finale of the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament in Toronto.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Raiders struck for three unanswered tallies in the middle stanza to gain the upperhand on a pair of markers from Ian Martin and a single off the stick of Jacob Winterton, which proved to be the game-winner.

Heading into the third, the Kings capitalized on a man advantage opportunity with three and a half minutes remaining in regulation as Jonathon Kilby and Jesse Appel combined to set-up Owen Belisle for his fourth of the tourney.

Another power play helped the Kings pull to within one with 1:48 to go as Kilby capitalized on assists from Anthony Biniaris and Belisle.

However the Kings would get no closer before time expired in the season-ending defeat.

Ajax-Pickering outshot Thunder Bay 25-18 with Cole Brady picking up the win and Jordan Smith the loss.

Player of the game honours went to Martin and Belisle for their respective sides.
