Major and minor midget Kings off to Michigan for NAPHL Dixon Cup championship tournament

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Both the Thunder Bay major and minor midget Kings are off to Troy, Mich., this weekend to compete in the North American Prospects Hockey League’s Dixon Cup Gold Division championship tournament.

The top 10 teams in each of the NAPHL’s under-18 and under-16 divisions throughout the 2016-17 regular season earned a berth in the Dixon Cup.

Competition for the major midgets begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. as they take on the Madison Capitols.

They will then meet Omaha AAA of Nebraska in a 3:15 p.m. start later in the day.

Saturday’s slate has them squaring off with the St. Louis Selects at 5 p.m.

As for the minor midgets, they’ll face-off with the Everett Jr. Silvertips from Washington State at 9:15 a.m. in their opener Friday.

They will then take to the ice twice Saturday with match-ups against Omaha’s U-16 side at 11 a.m. before tangling with Pennsylvania’s Esmark Stars at 5:15 p.m.

Further games both Thunder Bay clubs will be determined by their round robin results.

In regular season action both Kings’ teams finished ninth in their respective conferences with the majors going 10-9-1-2 in U-18 play while the minors ended up with a 10-11-0-1 mark vs. U-16 opposition.
