TELUS Cup Countdown: ’95 Kings were national champions

HUNDER BAY, Ont. – Making their second-ever appearance at the then Air Canada Cup Canadian National Midget Hockey Championship in 1995, the Thunder Bay Kings made the most of their opportunity as this powerful contingent of local selects went on to be crowned the top AAA midget team in the country.

The Kings claimed their first national crown that year, winning it all in Sherbrooke, Que.

After sweeping rival Kenora to claim the northwestern Ontario title, Thunder Bay headed to Saskatchewan for the West Regional where they were once again solid, highlighted by a 9-0 drubbing of the Tisdale Trojans in the championship game.

Earning their way to Quebec, the Kings, coached by David Bragnalo and Kelly Sundell along with manager, the late Cliff O’Brien, goaltender coach Paul Mackett and trainer Richard Bosch, the club continued their stellar play going unbeaten in the round robin.

They started with a tie with Red Deer from Alberta, who they would meet again in the final, before going on to drop the Magog Cantonniers (2-1); Wexford Raiders (5-3); Dartmouth Subways (3-1) and the host Ste-Foy Gouverneurs (3-1) to finish first overall in the standings.

Taking on Wexford in semfinal play, Thunder Bay skated to a convincing 5-1 victory.

Meeting Red Deer once more in the gold medal contest, the Kings fell behind 2-0 early, but sMARLed back behind the solid goaltending of Colin Zulianello to earn a 4-3 decision over the Chiefs to hoist their initial Air Canada Cup trophy.

Forward Jesse Heerema was the top point-getter among all skaters in Sherbrooke.
