TELUS Cup field set

HUNDER BAY, Ont. – All the competing clubs for the upcoming TELUS Cup Canadian National Midget Hockey Championship, April 22-28, at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont., are now known.

Hosted by the Thunder Bay Kings, in conjunction with Hockey Canada, Hockey Northwestern Ontario and the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association, the six-team field at the seven-day event will feature the Kings along with the Tisdale Trojans of Saskatchewan (West); Calgary Buffaloes (Pacific); Toronto Young Nationals (Central); Magog Cantonniers (Quebec) and the Halifax McDonald’s (Atlantic).

Thunder Bay and Tisdale met in the West Region final Sunday with both squads already knowing they were assured spots in the TELUS Cup.

Earning Pacific Region honours were the Calgary Buffaloes after they swept the Cariboo Cougars of British Columbia on home ice, taking the best-of-three final by scores of 5-2 and 3-2 in overtime.

In the Central Zone, the Toronto Young Nationals handed the North Bay Trappers their first loss of the season in a 4-0 upset Sunday in that championship game held in Bowmanville, Ont.

Punching their ticket to the Lakehead in Quebec are the Magog Cantonniers following a four-game sweep of the Lac St. Louis Lions to claim the title there.

Each of those contests were very close with Magog coming away victorious 4-3 in overtime, 6-3 that included an empty-netter, 2-1 and in 4-3 decision in OT in the final game.

Meanwhile, it was Halifax McDonald’s that claimed the Atlantic Region crown Sunday after they topped the Kensington Wild (P.E.I.) 4-1 in that Maritimes match-up Sunday afternoon in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
