Peewee Kings stymied in the Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – It was a tough start for the Thunder Bay peewee Kings over the weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., as they returned home winless against a pair of strong opponents in the Soo Jr. Greyhounds Showcase.

Thunder Bay was blanked twice by a powerful Soo Jr. Greyhounds side by identical 5-0 scores and also dropped a couple of decisions to a strong Oakland Jr. Grizzlies squad from Michigan by a 5-3 count before being humbled 11-0 in the finale.

Action in the other two contests in the Soo saw the Greyhounds edged the Grizzlies 1-0 before Oakland handed Sault Ste. Marie their first loss of the season in 14 outings by a 4-1 score.

In the opener vs. the Hounds Oliver Tuchenhagen started in net and suffered the setback.

Game 1 against the Grizzlies saw them get on the board first only to see the Kings respond with a Jett Mintenko marker at 2:16.

An Oakland power play allowed them to retake the lead later in the frame, but once again Thunder Bay countered with a man advantage effort of their own as Jack Pineau finished off the work of Alex Remenda and Mannerplaw Winning.

The Grizzlies took their third lead of the game in the middle session, but once again the Kings drew level on Pineau’s second of the day.

Oakland however got the eventual game-winner late in the frame then added some insurance with 1:17 to go in the third to round out the scoring.

Keenan Marks suffered the setback in goal for Thunder Bay.

Marks also got the start in the second game against the Soo, who once again proved to be too strong on this night.

Tuchenhagen got the nod to begin in net in the final match-up with the Grizzlies who scored three times in the first and never looked back as they rolled to the one-sided victory.

The next out of town action for the peewee Kings will be the 36th annual Big Nickel tournament in Sudbury.
