Whitby tops Thunder Bay at peewee provincials
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Whitby Wildcats scored three times in both the first and third periods to defeat the Thunder Bay Kings 6-2 Wednesday in Day 3 action at the 2016 all-Ontario peewee championship in Sudbury.
It was all Whitby in the opening stanza as they struck for a trio of tallies in the frame to take a 3-0 cushion into the middle session.
The power play allowed Thunder Bay to get on the board early in the second as Jack Cook wristed one from the point that went top shelf beating Wildcats netminder Justin Dilauro.
Five minutes later the Kings got a break and pulled to within one as Nolan Desjardins came off the bench on a line change and proceeded to wire one high blocker side to make it a 3-2 game heading into the third.
Whitby got that back two and a half minutes into the final session as Tristan Pelligra corralled a rebound from in front, spun and slid his attempt past Brayden McKever in the Thunder Bay goal.
Pelligra added another with 10:08 to go as he drove down the left side and snapped a low shot into the right corner past the outstretched pad of McKever.
Whitby added one more in the final minute from Matthew Cato on a tap in to round out the scoring.
Shots on goal in the contest favoured Thunder Bay by a 34-26 count.
With the loss the Kings fall to 0-3-1 at the seven-team event and will conclude round robin play Thursday facing two-must win situations as well as needing help from the scores of other games if they hope to advance to Friday semifinals.
Thunder Bay will start the day with an 8:15 a.m. encounter vs. the Nickel City Sons before finishing up against the current first place Don Mills Flyers at 2:15 p.m.
