THUNDER BAY – Cooper Disher scored three times, while Jace Voortman had a goal and four assists, to help lead the Thunder Bay Kings to a 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Valley Titans Friday in Day 3 action at the All-Ontario under-13 AAA championship, presented by BioSteel, at the Fort William Gardens.
Ottawa Valley got on the board first after Joshua Moncrief won a draw back to the point where Jake Lowrey moved in and sent a shot from the top of the left circle that sailed through a partial screen and beat Thunder Bay starter Kainaan Macgillivray at 3:39.
The Kings struck quickly in the middle stanza to tie the game as Voortman went in on a two-man break and fed Cooper Disher, who whipped one by the Titans’ Marcus Smolcic 45 seconds in.
Thunder Bay then went in front midway through the contest when Brady Nash wheeled out of the corner and fired one top shelf.
Adding a third marker before the intermission, the Kings’ Felix Sapay banged in a rebound off an Owen Trevisanutto attempt from in close.
The Kings went ahead by three in the final frame after a face-off in their own zone was pushed ahead and saw Voortman dash down the left wing before he powered his way to the net a put one under Smolcic.
Battling back, Ottawa Valley saw Calum Mason skate in on the right side and cut to the middle and while using a defender as screen, put one past Macgillivray.
They then made it a one-goal game with 1:26 to go as Spencer Greenhalgh flew down the wing and put one upstairs for a shorthanded tally.
Still on the power play however, Thunder Bay got that right back when Voortman set-up Disher, who notched his second of the day.
Disher then finished off his hat trick in the final moments, with help once again from Voortman, who picked up player of the game honours for his side.
Jake Lowrey earned the accolades for Ottawa Valley.
With the result, the Kings moved to 2-2 in the seven-team event while the Titans fell to 1-3.
