Toronto edges Thunder Bay at TELUS Cup

HUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Toronto Young Nationals tallied twice in a nine-second span to erase a one-goal deficit early in the third period to propel them a 3-2 victory over the Thunder Bay Kings Wednesday in Day 3 play at the 2019 TELUS Cup Canadian National Midget Hockey Championship at the Fort William Gardens.

Thunder Bay did get off to the right start by notching the lone tally of the opening 20 minutes on a Nikolas Campbell effort.

After the Young Nationals came back it to tie it in the middle session, the Kings responded promptly to go back on top as Trenton Morriseau buried one from the slot with assists going to Anthony Biniaris and Christian Veneruzzo.

With the home side carrying the 2-1 cushion into the third, Toronto’s Ryan Mansfield slammed in the equalizer to knot the affair at 2-2 while Joseph Martino came right back and put a shot on net that found its way past Thunder Bay netminder Jordan Smith and in for the eventual game-winner.

The Kings looked to draw level from there, but the Young Nationals held firm from there to preserve the win.

James Gray picked up the decision in net for NATS while Smith made 25 stops in defeat.

Thunder Bay returns to the ice Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as they take on the Halifax Macs back at the Gardens.
