Bantam Kings capture HNO district title

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Kings claimed the Hockey Northwestern Ontario bantam AAA district title Saturday at Fort William First Nation Arena after defeating the Fort Frances Canadians 6-1 and sweeping the best-of-three final two games to none.

The Kings came to play and a strong start sent them on their way as they roared out to a 3-0 cushion before the contest was four minutes old.

Nikolas Campbell, Michael Stubbs and Alex Atwill all connected in a span of two minutes and 35 seconds early to set the tone offensively.

Fort Frances got one back at 4:51 of the middle stanza compliments of Dylan Winsor, who finished off the work of Ben Hackl and Carter Armstrong.

However Thunder Bay countered by striking shorthanded with 3:47 left in the session on Campbell’s second of the day.

Action in the final frame saw the Kings put the game away by adding the last two tallies of the match-up off the sticks of Atwill and Nicholas Degrazia.

Atwill, Degrazia and Konner Kuuskivi also chipped in with two assists each in the triumph.

The Kings outshot the Canadians 37-11 overall with Stephan Bourgeois picking up the win and Isaac Fagnilli the defeat.

Despite the Kings having claimed the district crown, the two teams will meet once again at 6 p.m. Saturday as a tune-up for both clubs heading into provincial AAA bantam championship March 27-31 at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.
