Kings complete HNO Districts sweep as majors win AAA midget crown in Kenora

KENORA, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Kings made it a three-team sweep of the Hockey Northwestern Ontario district championships after the majors won the AAA midget crown Saturday with a 2-0 triumph over the Kenora Thistles at the Kenora Recreation Centre.

The result helped the Kings take the best-of-three set vs. Kenora 2-0 and the club will now move on to the TELUS Cup West Regional in in Beausejour, Man., March 30 through April 2.

In Saturday’s match-up vs. the Thistles, Thunder Bay picked up the eventual winner near the 14-minute mark of the first period when Jayden Wojciechowski converted moments into a man advantage opportunity.

Wojciechowski then helped the Kings provide some insurance in the middle stanza as he set-up Jacob Brown, in what turned out to be the final goal of the game.

Ryan Fanti did the rest in the Thunder Bay net stopping all 30 shots he faced to post the shutout.

Thistles’ goalkeeper Tyler Szturm was busy facing 40 attempts in a season-ending defeat for Kenora.

Meanwhile both the peewee and bantam Kings claimed their respective district titles earlier in the day at Fort William First Nation Arena.
