Bantam Kings victorious in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. – The Thunder Bay bantam Kings are heading home with the championship trophy from the Star of the North tournament in Grand Rapids, Minn., after handling the Mahtomedi Zephyrs 4-1 in the title contest Sunday afternoon.

Levi Siau paced the Thunder Bay attack with two goals and an assist while Zach Fortin dished out a trio of helpers.

Jonathon Kilby notched another marker for the Kings and helped set-up one more.

Christian Veneruzzo supplied the other tally in the triumph.

Thunder Bay outshot Mahtomedi 25-19 in the final with Christian Cicigoi making 18 saves to record the win.

In semifinal action earlier Sunday vs. the Grand Forks Aviators, Michael Stubbs tallied twice, including the go-ahead marker with 3:09 remaining, to send the Kings to the title game with a 4-3 triumph.

Stubbs also had an earlier goal as did Siau and Veneruzzo.

Cicgoi finished with 22 stops to register the win in net for Thunder Bay.

It marks the second time in a week a Kings team has come away victorious in tournament play as the peewee side won it all at the Minnesota Gone Wild event in Blaine, Minn., thumping the Illinois Falcons 7-0 in the final.

The next out of town event for the bantam Kings will be the St. Cloud State Showcase Feb. 26-28.
