Bantam Kings advance to semifinals in Grand Rapids tourney

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. – The Thunder Bay bantam Kings are off to the semifinals in the Star of the North tournament in Grand Rapids, Minn., after posting a win and picking up a point in an overtime setback Saturday.

They will now take on the Grand Forks Aviators in one semifinal showdown Sunday at 9 a.m. with the winner moving on to the championship game at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s action saw Thunder Bay improve to 2-0-1 overall following a 5-0 decision over the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars before being clipped 4-3, in extra time, by the Mahtomedi Zephyrs.

Against the Jaguars, the opening period was scoreless before the Kings got going offensively with a pair of middle session markers from Gareth Aegard and Michael Stubbs.

They then put the game away in the third tacking on tallies from Joseph McCollum, Keighan Gerrie and Levi Siau to secure the victory.

Thunder Bay outshot Bloomington Jefferson 38-12 overall in the contest with Christian Cicigoi posting the shutout.

In the evening match-up vs. Mahtomedi, the Kings fell behind early 2-0 before roaring back with three markers before the opening session was complete on a pair of markers by Jonathon Kilby and a single courtesy of Gerrie.

Mahtomedi tied it early in the third then won it with 64 seconds left in OT.

Jordan Smith faced 24 shots in defeat for the Kings vs. the Zephyrs.
