Major midget Kings crowned champions at Troy Top Shelf tournament

TROY, Mich. – The Thunder Bay major midget Kings used the strength of three second period goals and the shutout goaltending of Ryan Fanti to blank the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 3-0 Monday afternoon in the championship game of the Troy Top Shelf North American Future Prospects tournament in Troy, Mich.

Against the Michigan-based Grizzlies, the contest was scoreless through the opening frame.

In the middle stanza Stefan Lehto-Borich put the Kings on the board tipping in the shot by Robbie McCollum during a man advantage opportunity.

Evan Nicholas added another for Thunder Bay via the power play as he buried a rebound off a Alex Grant point blast.

Shane McKay added one more for the Kings later in the frame to round out the scoring in the contest.

Fanti stopped all 30 shots he faced to post the shutout and earn game most valuable player honours.

Thunder Bay forward Jacob Brown, along with defenceman McCollum, were named players of the tournament helping the Kings go 5-0-1 in six outings.

The club advanced to the title game after rocking the Kensington Valley Rebels 6-0 in semifinal action earlier in the day.

Cody Bruchkowski paced the Kings attack in the semifinal win, notching a hat trick.

Jacob Brown chipped in with a pair of markers while Baldino Aiello added a single.

Tyler Szturm turned aside all 20 shots he faced in net to record the shutout for the Kings.
