Minor midget Kings finish strong in Round 2 of NAPHL play

BLAINE, Minn. – The Thunder Bay minor midget Kings finished off strong in the final day of Round 2 action of the North American Prospects Hockey League Monday in Blaine, Minn., as they skated to a 3-2 triumph over the Valley Forge Minutemen.

In four games the Kings picked up seven of a possible eight points and now sit with an overall record of 5-3-0-1, which left them tied for fourth overall in the 17-team under-16 division.

The club’s overall standing could change, based on later results with other teams who were finishing contests later in the day.

In Monday’s match-up it was scoreless past the half-way point of the first period until Cody Hurd set-up Owen Belisle to put the Kings in front at 11:23.

Thunder Bay made it 2-0, via the power play, just over two minutes later when Joseph McCollum blasted home his first NAPHL marker.

Valley Forge narrowed the gap with the lone tally in the middle session then tied it during a man advantage opportunity 3:40 into the final stanza.

However the Kings came right back and got the game-winner 26 seconds later on Hurd’s initial league goal as he finished off a Cooper Witherspoon feed.

Thunder Bay outshot the Minutemen 35-27 overall with Jordan Smith picking up the win in goal.

The next NAPHL action for the Kings will be a four-game stint Nov. 11-13 in Colorado as they travel out west to compete in the town of Superior, 35 km outside of Denver.
