Peewee Kings go 3-1 in Minnesota
DULUTH, Minn. – The Thunder Bay peewee Kings wrapped up a four-game in Minnesota with a pair of victories Sunday.
Taking on the 29th ranked Hermantown Hawks, Thunder Bay skated to an 8-5 win Sunday morning before finishing up with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over the Cloquet Lumberjacks, who are slotted sixth in Minnesota.
The Kings split two games Saturday vs. the Duluth East Greyhounds dropping a narrow 2-1 decision in the opener while prevailing 3-2 in overtime in the finale.
In the match-up with Hermantown, Thunder Bay took a 3-1 lead after one on goals by Jack Cook, Jett Mintenko and Nolan Desjardins.
They then made it 6-4 through two on a pair of tallies by Ryan Doucette sandwiched around a single from Hunter Matyasovsky.
Doucette finished off a hat trick in the third, while Mintenko rounded things out offensively.
Brayden McKever picked up the win in net.
The club then concluded their weekend getting a third period power play effort from Alex Atwill for the lone goal of the game and shutout goaltending from Gage Stewart in the decision over Cloquet.
Next up for the peewee Kings will be the Hockey Northwestern Ontario branch championship March 11-13 in Thunder Bay with a berth to the all-Ontario championship, April 4-8, in Sudbury on the line.
Meanwhile, the major midget Kings dropped all three contests in weekend series in Faribault, Minn., against the Shattuck-St. Mary’s AAA midget side,
They fell 6-2 and 2-0 Saturday before being blanked 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Kings will now prepare for the HNO AAA midget districts, March 4-6 in Kenora.
There they will take on the Kenora Thistles in a best-of-three series with the winner moving on to represent the region at the TELUS Cup West Regional, March 31 through April 3 in Saskatoon, Sask.
