Kings split in Day 1 of HNO Districts

THUNDER BAY – It was a win and a loss for the Thunder Bay Kings Friday in Day 1 play of the Hockey Northwestern Ontario District Championships at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Game 1 of the day saw the Dryden Paper Kings rally for a 3-2 triumph over the peewee Kings while the Thunder Bay’s bantam squad rolled to a one-sided 10-0 win vs. the Kenora Thistles.

E.J. Paddington gave the peewees an early lead over Dryden with the lone marker of the first period.

Then then went up a pair four minutes into the middle session as Kyler Smith set-up Brady Butvin.

The Paper Kings started their comeback at 8:04 with Emerson Evans putting his side on the board.

They then tied it before the frame was complete on a Jade Windego effort.

Dryden kept coming and got the game-winner midway through the third as Nickolas Fagnilli connected on a power play to complete the rally.

Brayton Levesque picked up the win for the Paper Kings.

Oliver Tuchenhagen started for the Kings while Carter George suffered the loss in just over 10 minutes of relief.

Game 2 in this best-of-three affair goes Saturday at 3:30 p.m. back at FWFNA.

In the bantam match-up it was all Thunder Bay throughout.

Alex Pineau, Tyler Lewis and Jack Cook put them up by three after one.

The Kings blew it open in the second by striking five times on a pair from Drew Caddo while Cook, Lewis and Jeremy Dunmore added singles.

They then finished off the romp on goals from Dunmore and Matthew Valiquette in the third.

Special teams saw the Kings’ power play score four times in six opportunities.

Gage Stewart posted the shutout for Thunder Bay with Aidan Butts picked up the defeat for Kenora.

Game 2 goes Saturday at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, Game 1 of AAA midget final goes at 7 p.m. as the Kings meet the rival Kenora Thistles.
