Countdown to TELUS Cup West Regional underway for Kings

THUNDER BAY – The countdown is underway for the upcoming TELUS Cup West Regional AAA midget championship, presented by Windsor Plywood, which will be held April 5-8 at Fort William First Nation Arena.

This four-day event is being hosted by the Thunder Bay Kings, in conjunction with the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association and Hockey Northwestern Ontario.

Joining the Thunder Bay major midget Kings and fellow HNO representative Kenora Thistles at the four-day event will be the respective champions of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Midget Leagues with a berth being on the line to represent the West Region at the 2018 TELUS Cup Canadian National Midget Championship, April 23-29, in Sudbury, Ont.

Of note, the Kings along with TBMHA and HNO will be hosting the 2019 TELUS Cup at the Fort William Gardens.

As for the major midget Kings, they have plenty of game action awaiting them prior to the West Regional, including a two-game set this weekend in Faribault, Minn., vs. the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres under-18 side.

The two clubs will meet Saturday at 8 p.m. at the SSM Ice Arena before finishing up the mini series Sunday at 10 a.m.

From there Thunder Bay is off to Troy, Mich., next weekend, along with the minor midget Kings, to compete in the North American Prospects Hockey League’s Silver Division Playoff Tournament.

They also have five Lakehead Junior Hockey League contests remaining before meeting Kenora in the HNO District Championship.

That best-of-five match-up begins March 17-18 at Fort William First Nation Arena with Games 1 & 2 before heading to the Kenora Recreation Centre for Game 3, and if necessary Games 4 &5, March 23-25.
