THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Kings CCM Showcase, powered by OneHockey, at Fort William First Nation Arena came to a close Sunday with five games.
Here’s a recap of those contests.
PEEWEE: Gentry Galaxy 7 HNO Stars 5 – The Minnesota-based Galaxy sMARLed back from a 4-2 third period deficit by striking for five goals in the final frame as they rallied to defeat the Stars.
It was all HNO early as they jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead on markers from Nolan Mann, Koda Radigan and Carver Trist.
Gentry got one back before the frame was complete on a John Paul Snell effort.
Mann added another eight minutes into the middle session only to see Tyler Geyer answer that for the Galaxy with a shorthanded tally to make it 4-2 after two.
It was all Galaxy in the first 10 minutes of the third as they found the back of the net five times to secure the come from behind win.
Snell, Lucas Cernohous, Taton Hansen, Wes Berg and Jordan Tachney were the Gentry marksmen in the stanza while Mann rounded out the scoring as he finished off a hat trick for HNO with 6:04 left with a power play goal.
The Stars outshot the Galaxy 27-22 with Louden McCoy posting the win and Ethan Rose suffering the defeat.
MIDGET: Kenora Thistles 3 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres U-16 1 – Kenora got a pair of tallies from Owen Stebnitsky, including the game-winner, along with a 29-save effort from goaltender Tyler Szturm as they skated past Shattuck-St. Mary’s.
The Sabres notched the lone offensive effort of the first as Isaac Carlson scored shorthanded.
Stebnitsky then added both his markers in the second stanza to put the Thistles up by one after 40 minutes.
Jayme Caron then iced it for the Thistles with an empty netter with 56 seconds to go to round out the scoring.
Shattuck saw Zac Lymn and Darius Bell split time in net as they faced 35 attempts in defeat.
MIDGET: Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres U-18 5 Major Midget Kings 2 – The Sabres gained a measure of revenge in the under-18 match-up as they earned the triumph over Thunder Bay.
After a scoreless first, Shattuck-St. Mary’s opened the scoring midway through the contest thanks to a Peter White power play goal.
Jett Larson added to the visitors lead 38 seconds later as they went up by two.
Sam Shrout made it 3-0 in the first minute of the third while White added another while his side was down a man at 5:57.
The Kings got on the board with 12:50 to go as Garrett Gammond converted on a man advantage opportunity.
Larson’s second of the game restored the Sabres lead before Robert Tyska got one final goal for Thunder Bay late to conclude the scoring.
Kyle Cote dished out three assists to help out SSM offensively.
Shattuck held the edge in shots 31-23 with Thomas Lalonde picking up the win and Seth McKay the loss.
PEEWEE: Kings 14 HNO Stars 0 – The Thunder Bay peewees humbled the Stars in this one-sided peewee contest.
It was 8-0 Kings after just one period of play before they added five more in the second stanza and one final marker in the third to finish off the romp.
Jett Mintenko had a hat trick, while Jack Pineau, Josh Lehto and Mannerplaw Winning had two apiece.
Also connecting was Owen Loubier, Connor Chisholm, Zach Biniaris and Max Buffone.
Keenan Marks made 11 stops to record the shutout.
BANTAM: Current River Comets Midget AA 3 Kings 1 – The Kings CCM Showcase came to a close as the Comets midget AA side earned a narrow triumph over the bantam Kings.
Benjamin Erin put Current River in front with 7:07 left in the opening frame only to see Nickolas Campbell get that back for the Kings two and a half minutes later.
The Comets got the eventual difference maker from Jacob Anttonen with just 16 seconds left in the middle session while Benjamin Fertado rounded out the scoring for Current River in the third.
Jakob Anton posted the victory between the pipes while Stephan Bourgeois suffered the setback for the bantams.
