Kings take 3 of 4 against Shattuck-St. Mary’s
THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Kings two midget sides capped off a successful weekend by taking three or four games vs. the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres AAA teams over the weekend at Fort William First Nation Arena.
The minor midgets swept their two-game set against Shattuck’s under-16 squad by scores of 2-1 in overtime Saturday and 3-1 Sunday.
In the opener Mackenzie Sedgwick put Thunder Bay in front midway through the first period with assists going to Dawson Lampi and Michael Goegan.
Shattuck-St. Mary’s drew level in the late going of the second stanza thanks to Guy Dela Rosa.
It stayed tied through the remainder of regulation and the waning moments of OT when Michael Stubbs, who was named a North American Prospects Hockey League U-16 All-Star, won it in dramatic fashion as he buried the game-winner with 1.5 seconds remaining in the extra session to end it.
Eric Vanska faced 26 shots in the Kings’ net to record the win.
Sunday’s tilt saw the Sabres open the scoring before Mason Bazaluk drew Thunder Bay level in the opening frame.
Following a scoreless middle period, Thunder Bay got the eventual game-winner from Goegan with 15 minutes to go.
Sedgwick added some insurance with a power play marker later in the third to round out the scoring.
Connor Lemieux registered the win with a 17-save effort.
Meanwhile the major midget Kings split their pair of match-ups against the Sabres, winning 5-3 Saturday before falling 5-4 in the finale Sunday.
