Major midget Kings take 2 from the Soo

HUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay major midget Kings continued their winning ways over the weekend by taking a two-game set against the Soo Indians of Michigan at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Saturday saw the 2019 TELUS Cup-host Kings collect a 3-1 decision over Sault Ste. Marie before completing the sweep with a 5-4 shootout victory Sunday.

Christian Veneruzzo, Travis Hrensrud and Kohl Johnson all scored in the Game 1 triumph while Jordan Smith made 20 saves to pick-up the win.

Veneruzzo tallied twice more in the Game 2 victory with Nicholas DeGrazia and Kyler Belluz supplying singles.

Thunder Bay outscored the Soo 2-1 in the shootout to secure the result.

Earning the win in net was Eric Vanska helping his side improve to 12-2 early on the campaign.

Next up for the major midgets will be the start of Lakehead Junior Hockey League play as they take on the Fighting Walleye Oct. 12 before meeting the defending LJHL champion Northern Hawks Oct. 13 in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts at FWFNA.

Meanwhile Thunder Bay’s minor midget Kings went 0-1-1 in two outings with the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres under-15 Prep School side from Faribault, Minn.

Shattuck skated to a 3-1 triumph in the opener Saturday at Delaney Arena while Sunday’s contest saw the Kings let a two-goal lead get away as they settled for a 4-4 draw with the Sabres at FWFNA.

Hunter Matyasovzky picked up the lone marker for Thunder Bay with an assist going to Jacob Sargent.

The Sabres outshot the Kings 25-19 in the match-up.

As for the finale, Dalton Mayes, Alex Atwill, Jack Cook and Colton Crysler tallied for home side.

The minor midgets are back at it Saturday and Sunday as they welcome the Minnesota Northern Wings to First Nation Arena with the opener slated for 7 p.m. while the final goes at 8 a.m. the following morning.

The U-16 Kings sport a 3-6 mark through their first nine outings of 2018-19.
