ARIBAULT, Minn. – The Thunder Bay major and minor midget Kings wrapped up a pair of two-game series Sunday in Faribault, Minn., against opponents from the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres Prep School program at J.P. Parise Arena with a win, a loss, an overtime setback and a tie.
Thunder Bay’s major midget under-18 side blanked the Sabres AAA midget squad 2-0 Saturday night before being edged 2-1 in overtime on Sunday morning.
Trenton Morriseau and Travis Hensrud both tallied in the triumph while Christian Veneruzzo doled out a pair of assists.
Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Sabres by a 23-20 count with Eric Vanska posting the shutout.
Sunday saw the Kings fall behind 1-0 in the first before Hensrud set-up Mason Bazaluk for the equalizer in the second stanza.
Following a scoreless third, Shattuck-St. Mary’s prevailed in OT to earn the weekend split.
Thunder Bay did out shoot their opponents 37-20 with Jordan Smith suffering the setback in net.
Meanwhile the Kings’ minor midget U-16s were shutout 4-0 Saturday evening against the Shattuck U-15s before letting a two-goal lead slip away late in an eventual 4-4 draw.
After being blanked Saturday by the SSM U-15s, the Kings fell behind 2-0 early on Sunday before Hunter Matyasovzky put Thunder Bay on the board before the first period was complete.
Special teams helped them gain the momentum in the middle stanza beginning with a power play marker from the point from Jack Cook to knot the affair at 2-2.
Noah Broughton then struck shorthanded to put the Kings in front before Matyasovzky buried his second of the afternoon to extend the Thunder Bay cushion.
Shattuck-St. Mary’s rallied in the third however as they scored twice in rapid succession with under five minutes to go to pull out the tie.
Goaltender Gage Stewart in the Thunder Bay net finished with 31 stops in the contest while the Kings put 22 attempts on the SSM net.
