Minor midget Kings to be part of 1st-ever OHL Northern Ontario Cup

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Great North Midget League, in collaboration with Northern Ontario Hockey Association, announced Monday the formation of the first-ever OHL Northern Ontario Cup.

This four-team showcase will be held March 2-4, 2018 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. and will feature the Thunder Bay minor midget Kings going up against the under-16 Sudbury Wolves, North Bay Trappers and the host Soo Thunderbirds during the course of the three-day event.

Each club will be guaranteed five games at the OHL Northern Ontario Cup, including three round robin contests, a semifinal match-up as well as either a berth in the gold-silver final or the third place bronze medal affair.

“We are excited to welcome the Thunder Bay minor midget Kings to our event,” offered GNML president Darren Potvin.

“Our goal is to have most; if not all, of the OHL clubs have representation at our event and ensure that our players in northern Ontario receive the proper scouting and development they deserve,” added Potvin.

As for the Kings, they too look forward to the additional exposure this event could bring.

“We discussed with the executive of the GNML about the possibility of this type of event and we all agreed this was something that we could not pass up on,” stated Kings President Gary Linquist.

“It will also provide a good tune-up for our minor midgets heading into the OHL Cup later that month in Toronto,” summarized Linquist.

The game schedule for the OHL Northern Ontario Cup will be announced at a later date.

The minor midget Kings return to North American Prospects Hockey League play Oct. 21-23 in Blaine, Minn., after posting a 2-1-1 record over the weekend in Round 1 action.
