Minor midget Kings wrap-up CCM Showcase with sweep of Capitols

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay minor midget Kings capped off a perfect weekend by completing a three-game sweep of the Madison Capitols under-16 side Sunday after skating to a 4-1 victory in the finale of the CCM AAA Showcase at Fort William First Nation Arena.

After a scoreless first period in Sunday’s contest, Thunder Bay got on the board nine minutes into the middle stanza on a Bryson Cataldo effort.

The Kings added another at 14:56 when Mackenzie Sedgwick finished off the work of teammates Travis Hensrud and Konner Kuuskivi.

Madison got one back later in the frame to pull within one heading into the third.

In the final frame, Hensrud buried a Michael Goegan feed at 6:42 before Cole McKenzie connected on the power play in the latter stages of the game to round out the scoring.

Hensrud had a big day for the minor midgets by adding three assists to go with his goal for a four-point day while Kuuskivi picked up a pair of helpers in the victory.

Eric Vanska and Stephan Bourgeois split the goaltending duties for the Kings in the win facing a combined 31 shots overall.

Thunder Bay won by scores of 3-1 and 2-1 Saturday to take the first two outings of the series leading into the weekend sweep of Madison.
