Nickel City rolls past Kenora

THUNDER BAY – The Nickel City Sons rode the strength of five first period goals and never looked back as they went on to roll past the Kenora Thistles 10-0 Wednesday in Day 1 play of the All-Ontario under-13 AAA hockey championship, presented by BioSteel, at the Fort William Gardens.

Pacing the Sons’ offensive attack were Preston Hebert, Seth Verbiwski, Dacey Dupuis, Jackson Mead and Owen Angus, who all chipped in with three points apiece.

Hebert, Verbiwski and Dupuis all tallied twice in the romp, with Mead, Angus, Grayson Hnatiuk and Cooper Niquet supplied singles.

Ty Imbeau had a relatively easy time of it between the pipes as the Nickel City netminder made nine stops to post the shutout.

Earning BioSteel player of the game honours were Verbiwski and Kenora’s Hayden Willett.

The Sons resume play Thursday with a 10 a.m. encounter with the Sun County Panthers while the Thistles meet the host Thunder Bay Kings tonight at 7 p.m.
