Special teams send Ajax-Pickering past Thunder Bay at peewee provincials

TORONTO, Ont. – The Ajax-Pickering Raiders notched three power play goals and added another while shorthanded to help them defeat the Thunder Bay Kings 5-1 Tuesday morning at the all-Ontario peewee championship at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

A pair of early man advantage opportunities allowed the Raiders strike twice in a 66-second span in the first period as they move the puck around nicely picking up tallies from Jonathan Snow and Bradley Barker.

The Kings got on the board with a power play effort of their own in the middle stanza as Manerplaw Winning worked himself free in front of the Ajax-Pickering net and took a pass from behind the goal and snapped it home with assists going to Jack Pineau and Connor Chisholm.

The Raiders got that back however by striking shorthanded late in the frame as Jayden Lavalley-Lewis drove hard around a Thunder Bay defender and beat Kings’ netminder Keenan Marks with a quick shot to put them up 3-1 after two.

Ajax-Pickering added another in the third from long range, thanks to a lucky bounce, as a Ryan Johnstone shot fired towards the goal took a strange hop and skipped into the net.

Another power play helped the Raiders tack on another as a right point shot was neatly redirected in by Snow.

They came back with another chance breaking in on a two-on-one, but Marks came across with a solid left pad save to keep the score as it was before time expired.

Player of the game honours went to Barker of Ajax-Pickering and Pineau for the Kings.

Thunder Bay returns to game action Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against the Soo Greyhounds.
