TELUS Cup volunteers required

HUNDER BAY — Canada’s national Midget hockey Championship is being held in Thunder Bay this April and the organizers need over 200 volunteers to ensure that it runs smoothly. According to Iain Angus, the Chair of Volunteers and Accreditation for the 2019 TELUS Cup, it is essential for the smooth operation of the tournament that a range of positions be filled by local volunteers. “Given that the proceeds of the TELUS Cup will go to supporting local hockey development, the more volunteers that we have the less we will have to spend to run the tournament” he said. “This is a significant operation and volunteers are key to it being a success.”

There are 10 different positions requiring volunteers ranging from the highly skilled medical supports required by Hockey Canada to individuals who will secure the exit doors and sell 50-50 tickets to the crowds. A multitude of volunteers are required for some positions with each person taking a few shifts while others like the Team Liaison positions total 5 – one for each visiting team and they will be with their team for the entire week. The organizers are also looking to recruit choirs and soloists to sing the National Anthem at the start of each game.

The following are the available positions:

Access Control – Ticket takers/scanners, ushers, exit door monitors, VIP and media access control

Drivers – Transporting game officials between accommodations and FW Gardens as well as transporting others as required. Vehicles will be SUVs supplied by the championship. Individuals applying to work in transportation will be required to submit a driver’s abstract and have a valid license.

Hospitality Room Attendants – Assigned to a variety of hospitality rooms ensuring food and beverage availability, the room is cleaned, provide information and support to attendees as required.

Media Services – Volunteers will support all media operations throughout the venue. This position includes a range of media activity including media workroom, press box, broadcast, mix zone and statistics distribution. Individuals prepared to learn the ins and outs of media operations and work in a fast-paced environment will find this role suited for them.

Medical – Medical lead, physicians, EMS/St John’s Ambulance, Dentist, Chiropractor and Physiotherapist are on-call positions.

National Anthem Singer or Choir – Sing the bilingual version of O Canada prior to the start of each game.

Team Host – Volunteers will be the main point of contact and provide support to their team from the time of arrival to the time of departure. Volunteers will assist in managing their team’s food and beverages, transportation, communications etc. One individual will be assigned to accompany each team throughout their stay in Thunder Bay and provide a range of liaison support. One bilingual Host is required to be with the Quebec Team.

Telephone Calling – well before the Cup connecting with Kings Alumni to confirm attendance at the TELUS Cup

Ticket Sellers – selling TELUS Cup packages and tickets at events prior to the Cup as well as 50:50 and Raffle Draw tickets at the games.

VIP Liaison – Escorts VIPs to assigned location, ensures they follow the appropriate agenda and remains available for assistance as required.

All volunteers 18 and over, with the exception of the telephone calling and the singer/choir will require a Police Records Check.  Those individuals who have had one completed in the last three years are not required to get it again.
