THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Updates from the Thunder Bay Kings CCM Showcase, at Fort William First Nation Arena after Day 2.
PEEWEE: Gentry Galaxy 4 HNO Stars 2 – The Minnesota side got a goal and two assists from Lucas Cernohous to help them double up the Stars.
Gentry grabbed an early 2-0 lead on markers from Taton Hansen and Tyler Geyer before Barrett Edenburn got one back for HNO on the power play in the latter stages of the first period.
Bryce Laager of the Galaxy and Ben Norlock of the Stars, on a man advantage, traded tallies early in the third before Cernohous rounded out the scoring at 5:17.
Shots on goal favoured Gentry by a 24-20 count with Louden McCoy picking up the win and Ethan Rose the loss.
MIDGET: Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres U-18 5 Kenora Thistles 4 – The Sabres got two goals apiece from Peter White and Jake Vaughan to help them edge the Thistles.
Shattuck sMARLed out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes on White’s two tallies and a single from Vaughan.
Kenora got one back before the session was complete off the stick of Colton Yaremko, who connected on the power play at 16:12.
The Thistles pulled to within one with just over two minutes left in the middle frame as Owen Stebnitsky finished off the feed of Samuel Brunton.
The Sabres came back in the third and added markers from Tyler Cooper and Vaughan to go back up by three before Kenora’s Carter Tresoor added one late while his side was up a man to finish things off.
Jett Larson dished out three assists to aid the Shattuck-St. Mary’s cause.
Preston Kostlan made 22 saves to register the win for the Sabres while Tyler Szturm faced 37 shots in a losing cause for Kenora.
BANTAM: Current River Comets midget AA 5 Kings 4 – Current River got the game-winner from Jacob Anttonen with 2:35 remaining as they pulled out the narrow decision over the AAA bantam Kings.
Michael Stubbs notched first of three he would score for the Kings two and a half minutes into the contest only to see the Comets’ Alexander Erwin notch the equalizer just 68 seconds later.
Stubbs added another midway through the first to give his side a 2-1 lead after one period of play.
Cale Santin and Anttonen tallied for the midget AA squad in the middle session while Stubbs finished off his hat trick with a man advantage effort in the stanza.
After Nikolas Campbell put the Kings in front 6:52 into the third, Current River’s Dawson Kaemingh tied it with 11:32 to go setting the stage for Anttonen’s late marker to win it for the Comets.
Kaemingh and Jacob Sgambelluri had two assists apiece for the winners as did Owen Perala for the Kings.
Current River outshot the bantams 31-23 with Carson Heroux recording the victory and Stephane Bourgeois suffering the setback.
PEEWEE: Kings 4 Gentry Galaxy 2 – Alex Remenda and Mannerplaw Winning had a goal and assist each to help pace the Kings past the Galaxy.
After a scoreless opening frame, Thunder Bay got on the board with a man advantage marker from Jett Mintenko at 12:52 of the second.
Ethan Maki then made it 2-0 three and a half minutes later.
Winning would strike shorthanded early in the third to put the Kings up by three while Gentry’s Cernohous notched his club’s lone offensive effort at 12:13.
Remenda wrapped things up late to conclude the scoring.
Thunder Bay outshot Gentry 31-18 with Oliver Tuchenhagen picking up the win and McCoy suffering the setback.
MIDGET: Minor Midget Kings 3 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres U-16 2 – A well-played under-16 contest saw the Kings pull out the narrow triumph.
Ethan Carlson-Jourdain gave the home side the early lead only to see Shattuck’s Jacob McLynn knot the affair late in the first.
Cole Mackie put the Sabres in front in the middle stanza, but Thunder Bay got goals from Zachary Fortin and Copper Witherspoon before the period was over to conclude the game’s scoring.
Christian Cicigoi made 21 saves in registering the win while Darius Bell faced 36 attempts in net for Shattuck-St. Mary’s.
MIDGET: Major Midget Kings 5 Kenora Thistles 1 – The long-time rivals met for the first time this season with the Kings going on to earn the victory.
Kenora scored first in the contest thanks to Hunter Buzzi 5:19 into the contest.
Thunder Bay responded with a power play goal from Jayden Wojciechowski to knot the affair at 14:40.
The Kings went on to supply four unanswered markers to secure the win.
Joel Willan had the game-winner while Quintin Loon-Stewardson notched a pair of markers and Elijah Loon-Stewardson added another and dished out two assists for the winners.
Thunder Bay held the edge in shots 28-16 with Ryan Fanti picking up the win and Cooper Hatfield the loss.
BANTAM: V.P. Bearcats Midget AA 4 Kings 0 – Volunteer Pool saw Matt Difranco tally twice and assist on another while Gavin Perkins posted the shutout in a win over the bantam Kings.
The midget AA Bearcats began the scoring in the second period with Difranco notching his to markers.
V.P. then put the game away with strikes 11 seconds apart in the third from Nicholas Fazzari and Jeremy Crocker to finish things off.
Connor Lemiuex suffered the loss in net for the Kings.
