Minor midget Kings fall to 1-1 at NAPHL Showcase

BLAINE, Minn. – The Thunder Bay minor midget Kings fell to 1-1 at the North American Prospects Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minn., after dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to Meier AAA of Western Michigan Thursday evening.

It was all Meier in the first period as they controlled the play and out shot Thunder Bay and were rewarded with markers four minutes apart by Jacob Kalandyk and Ben Goguen to go up by a pair.

The Kings got out back midway through the middle stanza as Nicholas Hankala finished off the work of Keighan Gerrie and Zach Fortin, who picked up assists on the play.

Thunder Bay pressed the attack in the final stanza outshooting Meier by a wide margin, but they could not solve Z.J. Talimonte until the final minute.

Noah Deguzman knocked in a rebound in front of Jordan Smith in the Kings net with 3:30 remaining to put them up 3-1.

Smith was then pulled in the late going for an extra attacker and during a power play they saw Hahkala knock in another with 21 seconds remaining as he buried a cross-ice pass from Owen Belisle to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal in the contest were 24 apiece.

Friday’s action for the under-16 Kings will be an encounter with the Minnesota Blades at 12:30 p.m.
