Kings CCM Showcase, powered by OneHockey, Day 1 recap

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Kings CCM Showcase, powered by One Hockey, is underway at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Here’s a recap of Day 1 action:

PEEWEE: Kings 7 Gentry Galaxy 2 – Jett Mintenko notched a hat trick while Mannerplaw Winning tallied twice to help the Thunder Bay peewees open the CCM Showcase, powered by OneHockey, with a triumph.

Alex Arella and Josh Lehto also scored for the Kings while Lucas Cernohous and Jordan Tacheny replied for the Galaxy.

Zach Biniaris and Connor Chisholm dished out two assists apiece for the winning side.

Thunder Bay outshot Gentry 27-18 with Keenan Marks picking up the win in net for the Kings with Louden McCoy suffering the setback in goal for the Galaxy.

MIDGET: Minor Midget Kings 9 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres U-16 7 – It was a high-scoring Game 2 with the Thunder Bay minor midgets outlasting the Shattuck under-16 squad from Faribault, Minn.

Both clubs came out clicking offensively in the first frame with the Sabres grabbing a 4-3 lead.

Cullen Vinar had two of the goals for Shattuck-St. Mary’s while Isaac Carlson and Kaleb Ross supplied singles.

Owen Belisle, Christian Veneruzzo and Keighan Gerrie connected for the Kings in the stanza.

Action in the second stanza saw the local side out score the visitors 4-2 to take a 7-6 lead into the third.

Cooper Witherspoon, Veneruzzo, Belisle and Joseph McCollum were the Thunder Bay marksmen in the session with Cole Mackie notching both goals for the Sabres.

A couple of early third period efforts allowed the Kings to go up by three as Gerrie and Jesse Appel both found the back of the net while Will Kutch rounded out the scoring for SSM.

Belisle also had five assists in the win while Gerrie had a trio of helpers.

Shots were 33-22 in favour of the Kings Jordan Smith posted the win for Thunder Bay while Jac Lymn and Darius Bell both saw action in net for the Sabres in defeat.

MIDGET: Major Midget Kings 7 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres U-18 4 – More offensive production in the third match-up of the day as the major midget Kings got by the U-18 SSM Sabres.

Matthew Caruso and Jacob Brown put the home side up early before Shattuck got one back off the stick of Erik Kasner.

Thunder Bay upped their lead to 5-3 after two on markers from Cody Bruchowski, Elijah Loon-Stewardson and Jayden Wojiechowski.

Luke Mountain and Jake Vaughan had the Sabres’ tallies in the session.

Bruchowski added another early in the final frame before Owen Arfstrom clicked on the power play for Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

The Kings’ Baldino Aiello iced it with an empty netter with 21 seconds remaining to finish things off.

SSM held the edge in shots by a 34-33 count with Ryan Fanti picking up the win.

Thomas Lalonde started for the Sabres while Preston Kostlan came in midway through the contest.

PEEWEE: Kings 5 HNO Stars 3 – The peewee Kings improved to 2-0 with a narrow decision over the HNO side from the western part of the branch.

Alex Remenda, Winning, Mintenko, Jack Pineau and Cole Morancy all scored for Thunder Bay.

Morancy and Remenda also dished out two helpers each for three-point night.

Nolan Mann notched a pair for the Stars while Brandon Crosswell had the other.

Oliver Tuchenhagen registered the win in goal for the Kings.

BANTAM: Volunteer Pool Bearcats Midget AA 5 Kings 1 – The Bearcats got a trio of tallies from Michael Vecchio to help the midget AA side from the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association defeat the bantam Kings in the final game of the day.

Dawson Lampi staked the bantams to the lead with the lone marker of the opening period with assists going to Owen Perala and Kohl Johnson.

Vecchio took over in the middle session notching his first two markers of the evening to put V.P. up 2-1 after two.

Jeremy Crocker made it 3-1 20 seconds into the final stanza Vecchio capped off his hat trick midway through before Zack Lehto rounded out the scoring for the Bearcats.

V.P. outshot the Kings 33-18 overall with Cameron Ceci earning the win and Connor Lemieux suffering the loss.
